Advisory: Overnight Closures Set for I-16/I-95 Interchange Project in Chatham County

Motorists traveling through Chatham County should prepare for overnight interstate closures this week as part of the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects, according to an official update from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).

The temporary closures will affect ramps at the busy I-16/I-95 interchange, with detours in place to support active construction. The work is part of a multi-phase infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving safety and capacity in one of the state’s most heavily traveled corridors.

Closure Schedule & Impact

I-95 Northbound to I-16 Westbound

  • Closed: Tuesday, May 28 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Detour: Continue on I-95 North to Exit 102 (US 80/Bloomingdale Road), turn left, then re-enter I-95 South to access I-16 West

I-95 Southbound to I-16 Eastbound

  • Closed: Wednesday, May 29 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Detour: Continue on I-95 South to Exit 94 (GA 204), turn left, then re-enter I-95 North to access I-16 East

All construction activities are weather-permitting, and GDOT advises travelers to plan alternate routes accordingly.

Project Overview: 16@95 Improvement

The 16@95 Improvement Projects are designed to:

  • Enhance traffic flow at the I-16/I-95 interchange
  • Support regional freight and logistics traffic
  • Improve safety at high-volume access points near Savannah’s port infrastructure

This project is part of GDOT’s Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP) and includes new collector-distributor lanes, widened bridges, and interchange reconfiguration.

Public Safety Notice

Drivers should remain alert while traveling through work zones, reduce speeds, and watch for signage. Law enforcement may be present to assist with detour enforcement and traffic control.

“Overnight closures are timed to minimize disruption, but we ask all drivers to remain patient and cautious,” said a GDOT spokesperson.
