Clayton County Opens Doors to a Space Where Seniors Can Thrive
After years of planning and anticipation, the Sonna Singleton Gregory Senior Center has officially opened its doors in Ellenwood, Georgia — quickly earning a reputation as one of Clayton County’s most dynamic and accessible spaces for active aging.
Named after longtime public servant and Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Sonna Singleton Gregory, the center reflects a vision of dignity, vitality, and lifelong connection for residents ages 55 and up.
“We wanted more than a building,” said Chairwoman Gregory. “We wanted a space that feels like home — where our seniors are respected, supported, and celebrated.”
What the Center Offers
Located off Anvil Block Road, the center spans a large multi-purpose campus equipped with:
- A lap swimming pool for water aerobics and therapy
- A fitness center with low-impact machines and guided classes
- An on-site community garden maintained by local seniors
- Technology labs with support for digital literacy
- Dedicated rooms for games, crafts, and cultural programs
- Outdoor patio and walking paths for group recreation
All facilities are ADA-accessible, and trained staff are available to assist members with orientation, program sign-up, and wellness needs.
“Every corner of this center was designed with purpose,” said Dionne Blake, Director of Clayton County Senior Services. “From movement to mental health, we’re addressing the full picture of senior wellness.”
Programs That Support Mind, Body, and Community
The center isn’t just about facilities — it’s about community programming that empowers independence and well-being.
Some of the ongoing and upcoming programs include:
- Chair Yoga and Aqua Fit sessions weekly
- Cooking for One nutrition education workshops
- Grief counseling and caregiver support circles
- Beginner tech classes: Learning to use phones, tablets, and social media
- Senior movie nights and speaker events featuring local historians
The center also acts as a hub for Meals on Wheels coordination, medical screening events, and free shuttle services to nearby health providers and public libraries.
Why This Center Matters Now
Clayton County has one of the fastest-growing senior populations in South Metro Atlanta. By 2030, nearly 1 in 4 residents is projected to be age 60 or older.
“We’re living longer, but that only matters if we’re living well,” said Carolyn W., a longtime Riverdale resident who attends the center three times a week.
“This place makes you feel like you still matter — that you still belong.”
The center’s mission is simple: to reduce social isolation, improve physical and emotional health, and promote lifelong learning.
A Tribute in Brick and Spirit
The naming of the center is itself a reflection of local leadership and advocacy.
Sonna Singleton Gregory, who has served Clayton County for over two decades, was instrumental in shaping policies related to healthcare, housing, and elder support. Her commitment to senior inclusion led to SPLOST-backed funding that helped the center come to life.
“She fought for us when nobody else was,” said James R., a retired teacher from Jonesboro. “That name on the sign? It means something.”

The center is open to all Clayton County residents aged 55 and up. Membership is free, though registration is required for some structured programs.
