The 76th annual WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament was held Thursday Feb. 21 through Saturday,  Feb. 23 in Madison at the Kohl Center. Prairie du Chien was represented by four wrestlers; Matt Rogge, Traeton Saint, Reid Koenig and Bradyn Saint.

Third seeded Wauzeka-Steuben had a scare but survived visiting and 14th seeded Belmont 53-50 in overtime Tuesday night in a WIAA Division 5 Regional girls basketball game.

The Lady Hornets improved to 19-3 on the season. Belmont ended its season at 2-19.

Wauzeka-Steuben, ranked eighth in Division 5, will host sixth seeded Shullsburg on Feb. 22.

Qualifying for the WIAA State Tournament for Prairie du Chien are Bradyn Saint (152#), Matt Rogge (113#), Reid Koenig (145#) and Traeton Saint (138#).

The Prairie du Chien Blackhawk wrestling team is advancing four individuals to the state tournament. Adams-Friendship was the host of a WIAA Division 2 Sectional on Saturday, Feb. 16. PDC was represented by seven individuals, all of whom advanced from last Saturday’s Regional Tournament.

Highland defeated host River Ridge 57-51 in a Six Rivers West boys basketball game Monday afternoon. The game was moved up to 4:30 p.m. due to impending snow.

The Cardinals built a 25-19 lead by halftime. The second half was even, with each team scoring 32 points.

Highland improved to 5-11 overall and 3-6 in the conference. River Ridge is now 5-11 on the season and 3-6 in the Six Rivers West.

The PdC Blackhawks wrestling team shows off their Regional Championship plaque. This is their second consecutive championship and advances them to Team Sectionals on Tuesday at River Valley where they will wrestle Evansville/Albany in a 6 p.m. semifinal.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, the WIAA wrestling tournament series started in the state of Wisconsin. Prairie du Chien was host for a WIAA D2 Regional, with seven teams competing for the crown. 

The PDC grapplers showed up to wrestle, and came away with a Regional Championship, marking the second consecutive year the Hawks have done so. PDC scored 234 points on their way to a very convincing win. River Valley finished second with 178 points.

Lots of winners at 69th Prairie du Chien Ice Fisheree


Tim Schlein of Monona, Iowa, was the lucky winner of $5,000 in the grand prize drawing. Schlein said he purchased one ticket at The Crooked Oar Bar and Marina on Saturday, the day that he also fished in the fisheree. Schlein said the nice windfall will go towards house projects. There was a big turnout for the 69th Annual Prairie du Chien Ice Fisheree with about 500 anglers participating on Saturday and Sunday. Headquarters for the event was the Crooked Oar Bar and Marina north of Prairie du Chien on County K.

Those attending had a great time and numerous prizes were awarded. Prize winners were as follows:

Walleye-sauger: First, Eddie Ward, 4.348 pounds. Second, Jerry Ward, 3.612. Third, Ron Tammling, 3.318.

The Prairie du Chien High School girls basketball team continues to roll and has had one of the best starts to a season ever. The Lady Blackhawks are 16-0 as of Feb. 5, which is the third best start in program history and the third longest winning streak as well. Only the 17-0 start in the 1977-1978 season and a 21-0 start in 1982-1983 season are longer.

Hawkettes second at state


The Prairie du Chien High School Hawkettes placed second in Division 3 Kick at the State Dance Competition in La Crosse on Saturday. This is not the end of the season for the Hawkettes. Be sure to come out to a Prairie du Chien basketball game and catch the Hawkettes during a halftime show. The Hawkettes are also planning a youth camp and details will be sent out to parents and also posted on the Hawkettes’ Facebook page.

Seneca crushed visiting Weston 64-30 in a Ridge and Valley girls basketball game Friday night. 

Seneca increased their record to 6-7 overall and 4-4 in the Ridge and Valley. Weston dropped to 2-14 and 2-7.

Seneca will next host Kickapoo on Feb. 5.

Prairie du Chien High School wrestling is celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, having begun during the 1969-1970 school year after interest in the sport grew over the previous few years. The program has had several highlights over the years and is continuing to build a tradition of success.
