Although recent cold temperatures and snowfall don’t lead one to think about thunderstorms, flooding and tornadoes, it’s never too early to prepare for the severe weather warmer months can bring.

“It’s important,” said Clayton County Emergency Management Coordinator Sarah Moser. “Take time to practice preparedness—where to be, what to do. The more you practice, the better you can react.”

The McGregor Council, at its April 18 meeting, agreed to proceed with plans to create a development agreement for the Sullivan Opera House, after Dominic Sparrgrove, of Parkersburg, was revealed as the developer for the project. The council also gave the go-ahead to begin the process for disposal of the property and to review the city’s urban renewal plan for possible use of TIF.

The decision was in response to the city, earlier this month, being awarded a $100,000 Community Catalyst Building Remediation Grant for rehabilitation of the Sullivan Opera House.

Company selected to market sale of Garden View

At its April 16 meeting, the Monona Council agreed to enter into an exclusive representation agreement with Marcus & Millichap for marketing the sale of Garden View Senior Living Facility.

The city has maintained ownership of the facility since its construction, but the council, earlier this year, felt it was time to relinquish that control. 

“This is one more step to go down the path to accomplishing that,” said mayor Lynn Martinson.

Robert O. Hinkel

Robert O. Hinkel, 89, of Marquette, passed away Sunday, April 22, at his home.

 

He was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Wadena, the son of Oscar and Mae (Voshell) Hinkel. He married Wanita Bruehahn on Sept. 20, 1948, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in McGregor. She later preceded him in death on Feb. 10, 2000.

MFL MarMac high school music students joined those from other area schools at Waukon on April 7, to participate in Solo and Small Ensemble Festival. The contest included six “centers,” three for vocal performances and another three for instrumental performances. At the end of the day, one solo or ensemble performance from each center was selected as the “outstanding performance,” and invited to perform at All-State, in Ames, on May 9.

The short loop around the outer edge of the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre’s property will transform into a nature play trail this year. Plans include resurfacing the trail with crushed limestone and adding several activity stations and natural areas along the route. Two-vehicle accident claims life of McGregor man

An April 12 two-vehicle accident outside Monona claimed the life of a McGregor man.

 

The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 10:35 a.m., reporting a two-vehicle accident on Highway 52, approximately a quarter-mile south of Highway 18.

Kaylee Bachman is a testament to the fact that hard work, dedication, perseverance and attention to detail truly does pay off when competing in a sport. Last month, the MFL MarMac eighth grader earned the title of Level 8 All-Around State Champion at the Wisconsin State Gymnastics Championships. 

Kaylee competed with TNT Gymnastics, which has training locations in Prairie du Chien, as well as Waukon, Richland Center and Mauston. She’s been a gymnast at TNT since age 4.5, when parents Rachel and Chet enrolled her in recreational classes.

Rehabilitation efforts for the Sullivan Opera House received a large boost last week, when the city of McGregor was awarded a $100,000 Community Catalyst Building Remediation grant for the project. The announcement was made at an awards presentation during the Iowa Rural Development Summit, in Grinnell.

McGregor was one of 18 Iowa communities that received grants for the remediation or redevelopment of underutilized buildings to stimulate economic growth in the community.
