First meeting of the year for Guttenberg city council

By Shelia Tomkins

At its first meeting of the year on Jan. 5, the Guttenberg city council gave final approval to the mailbox ordinance and also set a public hearing for later this month to borrow money for a new tractor.

Mayor Russ Loven led councilmembers Virginia Saeugling, Fred Schaub, Dave Schlueter, Jane Parker and Steve Friedlein through the agenda. City Manager Mary Willett and City Attorney Mike Schuster were also on hand.

The council gave final approval to an ordinance that requires cluster mailboxes in the city except for Garber Road and Miners Creek Road. Prior to the vote, Bluff Street resident Charles Schindler spoke in favor of retaining individual mailboxes on that street.

The council set Jan. 20 as the date of a hearing on a proposal to borrow money for the purchase of a 2014 John Deere tractor in an amount not to exceed $60,000.

Two Guttenberg physicians earn statewide awards

Dr. Jeff Hoffmann, right, receives a Lifetime Achievement Award from Dr. Robin Barnett, IAFP Board Chair. According to a colleague, “Dr. Hoffmann practices the full range of family practice. He does obstetrics, pediatrics, and emergency medicine and has an active clinic. He shows great empathy to his patients and is well liked by these people for whom he has cared. Despite long hours and hard work, Dr. Hoffmann exudes an attitude that is positive and encouraging.” (Photo submitted)

Two Guttenberg physicians were honored with awards from the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians (IAFP) in November. Dr. Jeff Hoffmann was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and Dr. Nathan Shaw was chosen to receive the Farm Bureau Rural Physician Scholarship.

Dr. Hoffmann is both a committee member and past president of IAFP, and donor to the IAFP Foundation. He was nominated and selected by his colleagues for the Lifetime Achievement Award, given annually to a family physician who serves as a role model for other family physicians, residents, or medical students and has been significantly involved in community service and civic activities.

Dr. Hoffmann received the Iowa High School Athletic Association Sports Medicine Award during the 2013 Boys’ State Basketball Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Clayton Ridge High School Principal Kris Einck nominated Dr. Hoffmann for that award because of his significant contributions to the Guttenberg and Clayton Ridge athletic programs. Dr. Hoffmann began serving on the sidelines for local athletic teams in the early 1990s, when he and his wife Carolyn moved to Guttenberg, and helped found the first local wrestling program for students in 1991.

By Molly Moser

The first time LuAnn Bolsinger visited Graham, she was sixteen years old and had just earned her driver’s license. As she struggled to find her way to her boyfriend Tom’s house, she never dreamed she would someday be collecting the news for this tiny town.

LuAnn grew up in Greeley. She met Tom through members of his family who also lived there, and in 1978 she joined him as a resident of Graham. Tom graduated from high school in 1976 and began working for Exide Technologies. The couple share four children: Tony, of Zwingle, and Amanda, Cassie, and Brittney, of Waterloo.

In December of 2013, after a year of collecting input from the community and extensive research about Guttenberg, the city council approved a new comprehensive plan, the first since 1970. One year later, The Press checks in with Mayor Russ Loven and City Manager Mary Willett about the first twelve months of progress on the plan.

“Overall, this is a 20-30 year plan,” said the mayor. Comprehensive plan completion was listed as one of the top accomplishments of 2013 during a strategic planning session city officials attended early in 2014. Many of the goals set for 2014 were aligned with the comprehensive plan, and many were indeed accomplished throughout the year.

The comprehensive plan is broken into nine chapters. Following is a list of the addressed chapter’s goals and corresponding 2014 undertakings.
