The Central Community School Board covered a number of housekeeping items at the last meeting of the calendar year. The meeting was held Dec. 21, with both in-person and Zoom participation.

Following unanimous approval of the consent agenda, there was a presentation by members of the seventh and eighth grade classes on a possible lock-in for March 19 and 20. The event, if approved, will be funded with some of the proceeds from the ongoing can redemption effort coordinated by Central students.

Board members also discussed the logistics of an upcoming wrestling meet that would include 12 teams. The issue of whether or not to allow spectators is still unresolved. However, high school principal Aaron Reinhart, who also serves as athletic director, and school nurse Meghan Bergan agreed that the school is not ready to allow an unlimited number of spectators. It was also noted that Gov. Kim Reynolds could issue new spectator guidelines by Jan. 9, which is when the large meet is scheduled to take place.

A number of personnel assignments were approved. These included Sam Hilgerson, who will be a volunteer boys basketball coach. Jarod Bormann’s role as strength and conditioning coach was extended for another six months. Coaches for fall sports were also unanimously approved. They included: Michael Smith, head volleyball coach; Stephanie Burke, assistant volleyball; Kelly Erickson, junior high volleyball; Mark Bauder, head cross country; Martha Bauder, junior high cross country; Joseph Koehn, head football; Colten Ledbeter, assistant football; Isaiah Hopp and Blake Rodenberg, junior high football; and Paula Mahoney, football/wrestling cheerleading.

Central superintendent Nick Trenkamp provided an update on the playground project. The committee continues to meet with companies interested in doing the work, and some temporary fixes have been made to existing equipment. One problem with the current equipment is the lack of parts. Trenkamp said the committee hopes to lock in prices soon and added that work will begin next summer, at the earliest.
