Joyce Amelia Backes, 82, of Garnavillo, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 24, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Hillary Burns-Kite. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo.

Joyce was born on Feb. 23, 1937, on the home farm near National, the daughter of Augusta and Zala (Palmer) Werger.

Joyce graduated from the Garnavillo High School and worked many years in the food service industry. She spent many years working at the Kountry Manor and White Springs in McGregor. On April 17, 1956, Joyce was united in marriage with Royce Backes in Farmersburg and this union blessed them with three sons. Joyce taught Sunday School at St. Peter’s Church for many years and enjoyed taking trips to the Casino Queen in Marquette. Joyce also enjoyed playing cards and other games including bingo and spending time with family and friends. 

Joyce will be forever loved and cherished by her three sons, Jerry Backes of Garnavillo, Randy (Sandy) Backes of Edgewood and Ricky Backes of Garnavillo; four grandchildren, Heather, Jessica, Kalen and Brittney; five great-grandchildren, Dacotah, Aiden, Jaxon, Rohman and Braxton; two sisters, Jan (Carroll) Oleson and Jeanette Dryer and many other relatives and friends.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Royce in 2014; great-granddaughter, Angel and two brothers, Keith and Chuck Werger.
