The Monona City Council approved the purchase of a new police vehicle at a special meeting Aug. 25.

A 2016 Ford Utility Interceptor will replace the Monona Police Department’s 2011 Chevrolet Caprice, at a price of roughly $30,000.

“It’s a very popular vehicle that’s being used in a lot of towns and counties,” noted city councilman John Elledge.

The new vehicle will be equipped with the current car’s camera and radio. A company will come in to tear out the Caprice and outfit the Interceptor.

Monona Police Chief Jo Amsden said the new vehicle should arrive in six to eight weeks.

Rather than trading in the Caprice, the city plans to sell it, in the hopes it will net more money for the new car installation.

“It’s an odd duck car,” Elledge noted of the Caprice. “It was only available to police and fire departments because it has such a high-performance engine.”
