Donald M. Wachter, 88, of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, April 23, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

Don was born Aug. 20, 1926 in Prairie du Chien the son of Elizabeth (Betty Fisher) and Henry Hillfritsch Wachter. He attended public school in Prairie du Chien and graduated in 1944. He married Madonna Hill in 1947 and together they had three children, David of Prairie du Chien, Mary (Carl) Gulbrandsen of Madison, and Richard (Louise) of Prairie du Chien. He has eight grandchildren; Lars Gulbrandsen, Christine Wachter (Craig) Nadjowski, Jeffrey (Carrie) Wachter, Ellen Gulbrandsen (Michael) Jalkut, Mathew (Janine) Wachter, Jonathon Wachter, Nicholas Wachter and Erik Gulbrandsen, five great granddaughters, Molly and Maggie Nadjowski, Zoe and Hannah Jalkut and Iris Wachter along with two great grandsons, Benjamin Jalkut and Monroe Wachter.

Don farmed most of his life, first with his parents on a farm on Frenchtown Road and then moving to Famechon Ridge in 1943 where his parents had purchased a farm. They used horses in their farming operation and from then on Don had a special love for draft horses. Later on he and David raised Belgian horses and at one time they had as many as 22 horses. For most of his farming career, Don was a dairy farmer, raising registered Holstein cattle. He was active in the Crawford County Holstein Association where he served as president for a term and St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien. Don was actively engaged in farming until the age of 84. 

A memorial service will be Saturday, April 25, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien with Rev. Joe Irvin officiating. A private family interment will be later in the Evergreen Cemetery in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Friday, April 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien and at the church on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
